Case study: Omaio, Eastern Bay of Plenty

Omaio has some of the most fertile soils in New Zealand but they’re not being used to their fullest potential. Currently, maize farmers are reaping the benefits of this land without contributing to whānau employment or the local economy.

This video looks at how the whānau of Omaio are working with scientists to gain the tools and training that will allow them to monitor climate data.

This data will help them in their mission to create more jobs and a better economy by using their land for higher-value crops such as kiwifruit, while considering how these changes will remain sustainable in the future.
